Course Description:

In this course, Katie Robinson, PhD, MPH, RD, LD, CNSC and Angela Lago, MS, RD, LDN, FAND will define the Malnutrition Quality Improvement Initiative (MQii) and the Global Malnutrition Composite Score (GMCS); discuss the prevalence of malnutrition in the acute care setting and its relationship to health equity; identify best practices for implementing key components of the nutrition care process; and more! Originally presented as a live webinar on August 15, 2023.

• Define the Malnutrition Quality Improvement Initiative (MQii) and the Global Malnutrition Composite Score (GMCS). 
• Discuss the prevalence of malnutrition in the acute care setting and its relationship to health equity. 
• Identify best practices for implementing key components of the nutrition care process. 
• Examine opportunities to engage with hospital quality care teams and quality improvement initiatives.

Katie Robinson, PhD, MPH, RD, LD, CNSC serves as a Medical Science Liaison Manager within Scientific and Medical Affairs at Abbott Nutrition. Before joining Abbott, she conducted research on the impact of nutrition and genetics on outcomes of behavioral and surgical weight loss interventions. Dr Robinson completed her bachelor’s degree in Dietetics at Iowa State University and her dietetic internship at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). She earned her Master of Public Health and PhD in Nutritional Sciences at UIUC. During her time at UIUC, she taught multiple undergraduate and graduate courses and assisted with coordinating the undergraduate didactic program in dietetics. She also completed postdoctoral training at the University of Iowa within the College of Nursing and College of Internal Medicine. Dr Robinson has numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and has presented her research at national and international conferences.

Angela Lago, MS, RD, LDN, FAND

Angela is the Clinical Nutrition Manager at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, North Carolina, where she has worked since 2008. She is an active member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and a member of the Clinical Nutrition Management dietetics practice group, serving on the Professional Development Committee.  Angela obtained her BS in Nutrition from East Carolina University in 1999 and completed her dietetic internship at Winthrop University in 2001. She earned her MS in Nutrition from East Carolina University in 2006 and has been a Certified Nutrition Support Clinician since 2009.  Angela has been a part of the MQii Learning Collaborative since 2017 and has focused on Malnutrition throughout the continuum of care for the hospitalized patient, most recently shifting her focus to the Transition of Care for the malnourished patient upon discharge. Angela and her team were awarded a Duke Endowment Grant to help further their work in the malnourished patient population. Angela was awarded The People’s Choice Award at the 2019 Clinical Nutrition Manager Symposium for her poster titled, Bridging the Gap from Hospital to Home: Implementation of a Malnutrition Transitions of Care Program.
